Deliberate reflection upon clinical cases, a strategy to analyse clinical problems in a systematic way, comparing and contrasting clinical findings with different diagnostic hypotheses, have been shown to help medical students to improve their diagnostic accuracy through the reorganization of their current knowledge. To become experts, however, medical students must also expand their knowledge. My PhD project explored the potential of deliberate reflection to foster medical students’ motivation to engage in learning activities and to facilitate learning of new information, ultimately improving learning outcomes. After finishing my PhD, I continue to collaborate with iMERR.
